My New Chair

Sit Back and Relax

At last count we have 15 chairs in our house.  Combine our chairs with the two benches, six folding chairs, four sofas and a settee we can put about 40 folks give or take based on seat size in a seat.  The real story is my new chair.

My new chair is a recliner, nothing special, it rocks, swivels and of course it reclines.  The color is brown with oversized arms and soft fabric.  I told you nothing special.  It is my space, and the chair is the center piece.  It is where I have my first cup of coffee of the day and say my morning prayer, read my favorite magazine, watch my favorite TV program and sneak a midnight snack.  Like any centerpiece there are other things alongside the chair that make it more comfortable.  A side table with a tiffany lamp, or a lamp that looks like a tiffany lamp, USB for my phone and tablet, pull out tray for my favorite coffee cup and a small sign that is my daily inspiration, “make today an awesome day.”  Tucked away behind a small door there is room for my magazines, tablet and pens and pencil.  And, not to forget my tic toc clock.  Something about a tic toc clock, but that’s a story for another day.

My new chair looks more and more like me as the days pass.  I’ve added a white throw that my grandmother crocheted and a pillow that is ablaze with the colors that give me peace.  Let’s not forget the soft rug that tickles and massages my feet.  To the right of the chair is an east facing window that is just high enough that the morning sun washes through with a good morning smile.
Find your space and make it yours.  Yours to share and to keep for yourself.  It may be an old chair or a kitchen chair.  A space that you can easily get to for a moment or for a longer time if you need.  Find a space that can be a sanctuary for you in the middle of chaos or calm.

I encourage you to make the chair as ordinary as possible so that you can dress it however you want.  You may choose to change it slightly with the season.  Need some Christmas Spirit?  Add a holiday pillow or set a holiday ornament on the side table.  Cause for celebration? A small bouquet on the side table is a perfect choice.   And for inspiration, seek out a saying that speaks to you and display it prominently.  Find a clock, a funky and fun clock to remind you that time is yours to spend.

Share your chair.  Read a book to a child.  Have a light-hearted or deep discussion with a loved one.  A difficult conversation, in person or on the phone, have it while seated in your chair. I promise you that your chair will become a place that is always welcoming, where plans are made, problems are solved, and your story will be written.  I feel better just thinking about my new chair.
