Greed and Charity

Greed as the raw cocoa bean and Charity as the chocolate, now I ask you is there really any choice here!

The cost question always ends up with how much profit do we need to, well be profitable.

As a small business owner and partner, my husband and I continually struggle with the cost of our services versus the value.  The cost question always ends up with how much profit do we need to, well be profitable.  At the core of the discussion is the customer.  We like our customers; they are like family!  Our drivers spend on average 2 hours with a customer on each transportation ride, we get to know them, and we like them!

We find ourselves faced with economic challenges not only in business but personally that seem to change daily.  Oh, there are indicators, but wow what a roller coaster.

Economists, politicians, theologians, sociologists, pundits and the Facebook professionals . . . .  have all pointed to the cause of inflation and price increases and have offered their explanation from their respective disciplines and points of view.  But they all have used ‘greed’ in their explanation of how we got to our current situation.

Wikipedia describes greed as the self-serving desire for the pursuit of money, wealth, power, food, or other possessions, especially when this denies the same goods to others.

At one time or other we have all wrestled with ‘self serving desire’.  Who at one time or another has not wanted to accumulate more, have bigger and better things and move in influential circles.  Have we considered the cost and to whose expense.  Have we considered the sacrifice and to whose misery, likely so, but only after the consequences of our actions are felt and made apparent.

So, where am I going with this?  I am thinking about ethics.  Ethics in our daily business whether at home or at work.  Our ethics are premised in our core values.  Values can easily be corrupted if we begin to find ourselves living in areas that become progressively grayer.

Ethics is the major branch of philosophy that encompasses proper conduct and good living. It is significantly broader than the common conception of ethics as the analyzing of right and wrong. A central aspect of ethics is "the good life"; the life worth living or that is simply satisfying. (Wikipedia)

If we work toward the antithesis of greed, we see a way out and a way forward.  You know that the opposite of greed is charity!  Charity means demonstrating kindness toward others.  Some of the most contentious issues and colorful disagreements are seen in the wrestling between greed and charity.

We look at these ‘big’ words; greed, ethics, charity, values and can spend a lot of time discussing their meaning and application.  But think of greed as the raw cocoa bean and charity as the chocolate, now I ask you is there really any choice here!
